Grinnell is planning on being on Tybee Island from March 17-22 during our spring break, where we will be both practicing and having a good time on the beach. Last year we were able to scrimmage a couple other teams in the area at this time and would love to do so again this year. We also love to party, if you want to do that too. Hit us up at frisbee@grinnell.edu if interested.

Thanks,
Gio

A huge thank you to Lindsey Hack, Leila Tunnell, and Lindsay Lang for believing that building this tournament was possible, and for all of their investment of time and energy over the past few years (and then some).

Also, a huge thank you to the teams who have supported this tournament over the years, and to the many teams who are new to the tournament this year, but who have supported Without Limits for many, many years. It is such a privilege to have the support of so many teams over an extended period of time-- to see your friends' rookies' rookies in leadership positions, and to have their support, is humbling (and terrifying).

Thank you for helping us build this event!

Michelle

Hey All,

I am writing to assess interest in a tournament at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, VA (same site as Fusion and Layouts) on February 16-17. This would likely be a 16-24 team event. The facilities are beautiful.

You can check it out here:
http://smithriversportscomplex.com

Instead of a skills clinic Saturday PM, I would likely have a short leadership clinic and hold (free) consultation sessions with team captains who want to talk about season / team planning.

If you are interested in attending, please email contactus (at) withoutlimitsultimate dot com

I have interest from 8 teams already and would like to hear back from a few more before I move forward with booking the fields and putting together an event website.

Thanks,
Michelle

Outside of a paragraph on Ultiworld no chatter about this preseason tournament.

I was there, here are my thoughts:

**Disclaimer -- I spent the weekend watching FSU mostly and I coach the FSU B-team. Also...I'm a Florida Alum**

1. The Florida Section is as wide open as it has ever been. I watched most of the UF vs UCF quarter finals game and it was a pretty exciting, but also heated game.

Florida seems to be getting away from their "ride the studs" mentality; or at least were doing so this weekend (possibly in an attempt to build experience and get people meaningful playing time.)

They have distinct O and D lines with reigning FOTY Bobby Ley leading the O-line and Big Boss Man Rob Brice anchoring their D line. They looked to have split their next best players between these two squads, with long time b-teamers Calvin Vannoy and Bennett (Stein?) and my nomination for the 2012-2013 FOTY Tanner Kinkead on the o-line, while Derulo (sp?) was a major presence on their d-line.

UCF was without Freystader (sp?) and former FOTY Hickson and seemed to really rely on Alex Bullock (Kid) and Michael Ogren (Ogre) to do the hard work for them.

As I said the game was pretty exciting, UCF was up a break for most of the first half and then went on a big run to take half (8-4 i think). Florida stormed back after half-time to pull it to 8s and the 2nd half was back and forth until the end.

Down the stretch there were a couple really bad (from my perspective) calls by a UCF guy on plays in the endzone. But that's frisbee, and Florida has certainly had a reputation in the past for sketchy calls. Just unfortunate to see a game's outcome swayed so heavily by a couple calls.

UCF won 15-13.

FSU handled South Carolina in their qtrs game and seemed to be a lot more fired up for their semi finals matchup against UCF.

The two teams traded points to 7-7 (UCF starting on O) with both offenses pretty much cruising into the endzone. DUF stepped up and got a break to take half and then came out of half-time playing very good man defense, and clamping down on their marks which caused a good number of miscues and throw-aways by UCF.

FSU won 15-9 and it had to be one of the bigger wins in recent history for DUF.

All 3 teams look pretty capable of beating a lot of teams when playing at their best, but also seem prone to mental lapses that let teams back into games (this happened to FSU in both Dartmouth games. They were up comfortably and then took the pedal off the floor which allowed the Pain Train to bring it much closer).

That said, FSU looked really good this weekend. At no point did it really feel like teams were beating them, the few times they weren't successful on offense occurred when they forced something, rather than taking the easier look. As a whole they played very efficiently. They're pretty deep with 4 or 5 5th year seniors that have been playing together for 5 years, and some really great young talent as well.

I'm excited to see how they do against the toughest competition this year.

2. Ga Tech looks really good. The loss of Nick Lance is a massive one, but they look to be coping well. I didn't get to see as much of them as I would have liked, but I was impressed by what I saw. They have a lot of tall lanky hard working cutters, and are rumored to have picked up Alex Cooper from Tufts/Ironside. I didn't see him this weekend, but if that's true, they gotta be a favorite to win the Region.

3. Dartmouth has more/more creative cheers than any other team I have ever seen. I counted at least 6 separate distinct situational unique cheers that were all pretty entertaining and funny. The team never gave up in any game I saw (comeback win against Tech, two near comebacks against FSU) and they maintained a really positive mentality throughout.

On the field they got a lot of throws to space coming from the breakside out of a horizontal and looked to break around for resets. They had a few guys (#21/#25? especially)that made some huge plays for them, and really looked to get into power positions and get the disc deep. #4 for them had an amazing layout score in the finals on a huck that had everybody from both teams impressed. After a contentious game against UCF, it was nice to see how more spirited ultimate can look in the finals.

4. On the women's side, the Georgia Ho Dawgs looked flat out awesome. Talking to a former player, I learned they have 10 seniors on the team, and are led by 2 ozone players. I only caught the tail end of their game against the Seminole Ladies and their game against the Pleadies of UNC, but they throttled both teams, and looked twice as fast.

As mentioned on Ultiworld, the SLadies (for those not in the know) were the surprise of the tournament, with the team's first ever win against UNC and a milestone win against Michigan in qtrs. The SLadies stifled Michigan with a junky zone, and Michigan looks to be really missing the loss of Paula Seville who was at the tournament but apparently has graduated and was not playing.

In the Texas-FSU semis FSU just looked to run out of gas a bit, and their huck game wasn't on as Texas took care of business.

5. I had forgotten how much fun Athens is. Great food and bars. I highly recommend hitting hitting up Trappeze for anybody hungry for a huge selection of high quality beer and a great bite as well.

Who else was there and what did you see this weekend?

We have 4 teams already signed up and we're looking for 12 teams this year. Cost is $30 to play and $30 for dinner, party, and breakfast. There are camping or rooms that you can reserve at Costanoa.

Sign up here and we'll get back to you soon on confirming your bid and how to make your payment. If you don't have a team, sign up as a free agent and we'll put you on a team.

The formats manual states that parallel teams entering a bracket (eg, semis losers dropping down to the backdoor) may be switched if doing so avoids a rematch. Why wouldn't the same be true for the play-in game winners at nationals?

For instance, Ozone and Capitals were the pre-quarters winners today. They face Riot and Fury, respectively, even though Riot/Ozone was a pool play game yesterday. If they were switched, to make Ozone/Fury and Capitals/Riot, there would be no rematches. A similar situation is occurring in the open bracket.

For those wondering, the stream of the bucket/pbr game was great. Can't speak for the audio, b/c i'm at work.

And, the entire first half is already online...

Are you a tournament or league organizer that collects demographics?
What do you collect?
How do you use the information you've compiled?
Can I see your survey?
I'm hoping to build a survey this winter for my league to use so they can present our clubs demographics when approaching businesses for sponsorship. Down the road I would also like to see how other cities demographics compared to each other.

Any useful information or brainstorming, feel free to reply here or shoot me a message.
