Is there anybody from Boston headed to the UCPC that is willing to pick up a poor soul, arriving in Back Bay 7:55am Saturday morning, on their way to the conference?

Said poor soul offers Haribo gummy-bears and the questionable conversation skills of a person wired on caffeine after an overnight train ride from DC.

Seriously would appreciate a ride, I'm hoping not to miss the beginning of the keynote address.

Hi All,

We had a great time in Tallahassee this past weekend with players from the women's teams at Florida State, Central Florida, and Florida, as well as from the club women's team Tabby Rosa.

The clinic outline is here:
http://withoutlimitsultimate.com/projects/southeast-captaini ng-101-clinic/schedule/

A brief recap is here:
http://withoutlimitsultimate.blogspot.com/2013/02/southeast- captaining-101-clinic-recap.html

Some feedback from participants:
"I can't thank you enough for how much you do for the sport of women's ultimate and for putting so much effort into this clinic. I know you do it for many regions, but I feel like our region really clicked this weekend and that's super important. You really do go above and beyond for others. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!"

"I thought Michelle and Chelsea were great. I really appreciate what you are building and I truly believe you're going to see the huge impact you have on a nation wide basis with each clinic you instruct. I have to admit, I didn't really want to go but now I am so glad I did. Also, I am convinced to keep playing ultimate after college because of this clinic. So, thank you."

Thanks to all of the participants for coming to the clinic with an open mind and being engaged in all of the sessions. We were really impressed with all of you, and we had an awesome time at the clinic!

If you're interested in bringing a Captaining 101 Clinic to your area, please drop us a line:

The Georgia Gwinnett College Flatline will host the 2013 Flatline Classic in beautiful Lawrenceville, Georgia. The tournament is geared towards developmental and D-III teams alike. Priority will be given to college teams but club teams are encouraged to submit bids. As the tournament draws closer more details regarding amenities will be sent to teams with bids and applied to the listing. The tournament should prove exciting, inexpensive, and hopefully a mainstay in the region. THIS TOURNAMENT WILL NOT BE USAU SANCTIONED. If you are interested in attending please submit a bid to zhart1@ggc.edu.

All,

Your school-verified rosters need to be at USA Ultimate Headquarters by Friday, March 8th at 5:00 PM MST. You can't just have it postmarked before that date...it actually needs to be in their hands by that time or your team can't participate in Conference Championships, Regionals or Nationals.

You have 10 days which is plenty of time...get it over with today or tomorrow and get it in the mail.

We are now accepting applications for the South American Ultimate Tour. The tour will be a combination of Tournaments, clinics, pick-up games and sightseeing. While we are pursuing sponsors for the Tour, you will likely have to cover your own expenses, estimated at about $1500 plus airfare.

The tour will start in Venezuela around the 18-19 of July. A couple days of sightseeing or hanging at the beach, and then a tournament on July 20-21, either beach or grass, or maybe some of both. Then a couple of stops at other Ultimate towns during the week of July 22-26 in Venezuela and/or Columbia for pick-up games or clinics. A tournament in Cali on July 27th and possibly 28th. Watch Ultimate at the World games from July 28-30, then head to Ecuador for a tournament on August 3-4. More sightseeing and stops for pick-up games/clinics on the way to Peru for a tourney on August 10-11. Then head to La Paz, Bolivia for a mini Ulti camp sometime around August 14-15 with a World Record setting tournament at Caracoles on the 17-18. Caracoles sit at 16000 feet (4800 metres)

Hey everyone

My team currently has a bid secured for the Club Mixed division for Trouble in Vegas next weekend (March 2-3). Due to some unfortunate last-minute bails *after* everyone booked their flights, we are now down to just 4 guys and 6 girls.

The guys are still pretty enthused about going to Vegas, savage or not, but in the interest of not having injuries we'd ideally like to pick up a few subs. If you are an A or B level player who'd like to play some ultimate in Vegas next weekend, we'd be interested in having you on board. While we are generally just looking for guys, if bringing a lady is a condition then we are open to having 1-2 women as well.

Our team is composed mostly of college-age players from Vancouver, BC and its suburbs. Experience levels include competitive junior club, b-level college, and two of our women have played women's competitive touring with Zephyr. With our numbers we're obviously not in it to win it, but super excited about the idea of spending some quality time in Vegas.

If you are interested in picking up, send me an email at kwl10@sfu.ca

Thanks folks!
Kat

In 2005, Jim wrote an entry on his blog about where ultimate will be 10 years from then. I think it is strikingly spot on. http://parinella.blogspot.com/2005/05/trends-for-next-10-yea rs.html

If you want to hear what Jim has to say about the Future of Ultimate in 2013, make sure you attend the Ultimate Coaches and Players Conference on March 2 in Boston. He will be part of a panel discussion, which includes Gwen Amber, Tim Morrill, Brodie Smith and Elliot Trotter.

Four days to register before the price goes up $50.

many moons ago in the early 1990s the UPA under Robert Rauch's direction (Rauch is currently a member of WFDF) sought out the possibility of ultimate in the Olympics.

Using a consulting firm's logic and a businessman's acumen, Rauch and the UPA talked to as many IOC sports as they could and did their best to figure out the path to the olympics for ultimate. The conclusion: it wasn't going to happen any time soon. Like, maybe never.

Countless times I've seen people post on here and elsewhere whining that ultimate is still a minor sport and isn't played in enough countries. The "not in enough countries" argument has been bogus from the very beginning and every time someone posts that I cringe.

The answer, in short, is that the IOC is myopic, besieged by desiring sports, television-ratings hungry, highly political and aristocratic, perpetually scandal-ridden and, really, well, anyway -- let's just say that they are "human, all too human."

As the AP put it, before wrestling was dropped: "The report [on what sport to drop] analyzes more than three dozen criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity. With no official rankings or recommendations contained in the report, the final decision by the 15-member executive board will likely be influenced by political, emotional and sentimental factors."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/11/olympics-sports-ioc -program-pentathlon_n_2661418.html

Read between the lines and you get this:

and this:

and... well... not sure where ultimate will fit in.

So for the time being and foreseeable future it's the World Games and WFDF Worlds and US Open and USAU Championships and BULA Beach Worlds and Euro Clubs and all the rest... hundred of great tournaments. Good enough for me.

Ultimate Disc Store is now offering UltiCards! This week we've bundled a disc with the Essentials cards for just $15 which is normally the price for just the cards.

Don't need another disc? We also have all three card sets (Essentials, Drills, and Throwing) individually on sale, and also have them bundled together at a discounted rate. Click here to view all UltiCards products and bundles.

I will be working in Ventura during the week for the next few months and was hoping to play some pickup at some point. Anybody know of any games on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday nights that are still going on? Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to formally introduce ourselves.

We launched UltiCards in April last year and it's been an incredible year working on Ultimate.

We've just put up a blog post with some of our milestones from last year and I figured that would be a good way to introduce what we're about and what we've been doing.

Check the Milestones blog post here

And a link to the people behind UltiCards here

Here are a few of the highlights:

- We launched on April 23rd, 2012.
- Partnered with USAU to create official coaching materials for USAU Level I Coaches.
- Partnered with Ultimate Canada to provide Materials for the National Coaching Certification Program.
- NexGen Signature Series UltiCards. A set of cards with skills and drills from the NexGen Tour players.
- Released UltiCards in English, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, and French!
- Presented at the Ultimate Canada Conference (Topic: Building Partnerships in Ultimate)
- Helped raised over $4100 for Ultimate Peace. Working with WFDF and the Women's Master's Division at WUGC 2012.
- Sponsored lots of great tournaments and events and got to work with amazing Ultimate people from all over the world.

Question on Triple Threat [message #125487] Mon, 11 February 2013 19:59

Someone left this question/comment on my Triple Threat page (please contact me) so I thought I would respond here.

http://www.z-boyz.org/index.php?option=com_content&view= article&id=8&Itemid=14

"I think your ideas have some merit. You use very uneven comparisons at times, though.

For example, you are picturing throwers at the point of release, but making the comparison to a basketball player in "triple threat" stance. These throwers aren't triple threats at this point, but neither is a basketball player at the point of release for a shot, or who has just begun to dribble.

Similarly, to suggest that basketball players don't change their body mechanics when a defender attempts to block a shot and then compare that to an extended break backhand is unfair. To evade a defender, a basketballer may jump higher and extend further away from their opponent (e.g. fadeaway jump shot), and although this doesn't differ from their regular motion as much as the break backhand may appear to, it's still compromising the mechanics of the shot in the same way.

I recognise and agree with your point about moving straight after the pass, and being balanced as a player. I just think you've used biased examples."

I think you're missing the main premise of what the triple threat actually is. It is less about body mechanics and technique and more about a philosophical tool. It's a mental weapon, not a physical one.

In basketball, when you pick up the ball from a dribble, the defender automatically can defend you tighter. Yes? Conversely, this means that before you pick up the dribble, you have more leverage over a defender.

In Ultimate, it's the same thing. As long as you have proven to the defense that they have to honor all three threats, they automatically have to play you looser. You now have more leverage over them then you previously did.. See what I'm saying? It's more of a mental shift than anything. A paradigm shift, if you will.

It is fair to compare that to an extended backhand, as you say. You will almost never, ever, see me that far off balance (where I am unable to penetrate, I am always upright with most of my balance on top of my pivot foot). It just never happens. When you have the kind of leverage gained by demonstrating the triple threat, you don't need to get around the marker as much as you're assuming you do. That goes away, but that is something that you can only really know either by doing, or by watching and since I'm the only legitimate triple threat in the world, you're going to have to figure it out for yourself--on the field.

Or. maybe Poulos and I can get together enough interested tarheels and we can finally get this shit filmed.

I don't read RSD so email me if you would like a response.

Hey Everyone,

I want to help you design your jersey!
I'm looking to share my skill set, build up my portfolio, make some new friends and maybe get a free jersey out of it *cough*

Do you have good ideas but don't know how to get them onto paper(jersey)? This is where I come in. I have been using Illustrator and Photoshop for many years now and love designing jerseys! I can do a lot in both programs and can't wait to find ways to solve your ridiculous requests.

If this is of interest to you shoot me an email at hatarn72 AT gmail.com

-------------
I don't know how much traffic I'll get doing this so this will start as a first come first serve basis and I may have to deny people if I get too overwhelmed.
