Hi,
every year there are hundreds if not thousands of Frisbee tournaments in the States and Canada (FFindr lists around 300 per year: http://ffindr.com/en/calendar/north-america), and very often on popular spring/summer/autumn weekends... a frequent question is: how to chose the right one? Several FFindr users approached me with the idea to establish a tournament rating on FFindr, and now is the time to get things rolling.
Before implementing the feature I would like to ask the community WHAT exactly the key factors are to determine a good Frisbee tournament. Here is what I have so far, feel free to complete the list or to add your ideas.
- 5 categories with scores from 1 to 5 (plus "no rating")
- a global score, averaging the 5 categories
- being able to comment the rating
The key factors so far, no grouping for categories yet:
- field and changing room quality
- competition aspects (schedule, seeding, system)
- transportation
- accommodation
- feel good factor
- friendliness of organisation
- party and entertainment
- food
- price/performance ratio
Thanks for your feedback (please send to contact@ffindr.com) and have a nice day,
Christian
P.S. Any other good (or bad, you never know) idea is also welcome...

OU Ultimate is proud to announce that the 2010 edition of Just Plain Nasty will be held at the University of Oklahoma's lush intramural complex on October 23 and 24 and that we are now accepting bids.
Historically the South's best teams have all descended upon Norman for an excellent fall tune-up tourney, complete with plenty of quality field space (in a single location), all the standard tournament amenities and a Saturday night party pitting the Apes against the alums that's sure to get all 6'6'' of Chris 'Daddy' Bay kicked out of one of Norman's finest serving establishments.
Bid price is $250 for open, $175 for women (sorry for an email that made the early rounds identifying last year's women's price as what we would charge). Please send a check to the following address:
OU Ultimate
1524 Asp Ave
Box # 1009W
Norman, OK 73072

These are the basic rough cuts that I tried to have done for the Junior World's coaches before their flights to Germany. Each team had a showcase game on Amherst College's campus the final night of the training camp. The Junior Boys team played a combination of Amherst alumni and Bodhi club players (correct me if I'm wrong since I'm not an east coaster), while the Junior Girls team played a similar combination of club ladies from the Amherst area.
Junior Boys: http://vimeo.com/14754365
Junior Girls: http://vimeo.com/14745248
(Again, these were attempted to be edited between 10pm-3am when I left the training camp. I attempted to put these games onto Ben V's computer, but lacked the necessary cables... but I did not find this out until about 2:30am and had already cut the games. There are no scores or overlays, but I figured they still have some value as is)

The Oberlin Flying Horsecows and the Oberlin Preying Manti invite you
(and your ultimate team!) to come play in the 2010 edition of Force
Freedom. The tournament will be October 9th-10th, located on the
campus of Oberlin College (about a 30 minute drive Southwest of
Cleveland). The fee for the tournament is $250, which gets you lined
fields, food, water, and access to a trainer during the tournament.
There are currently 13 open bids left, but unfortunately no women's
bids left. If enough new women's teams want to come, the tournament
(current 8 women's teams) could possibly be expanded, but no
guarantees.
To submit a bit or to view the list of teams signed up to come, visit
the tournament website at https://sites.google.com/site/forcefreedom2010/
Hope to see you there.

Don't forget we can do custom jersey colors using the graffiti or cut and sew sublimation. Any design you can think of - we can do it. Also, our prices include everything. No hidden fees or screen set up costs.

The Big East Conference Tournament Oct 23-24 in Pittsburgh Pa will be
a tribute to Zach Bzdyra, a former UConn Ultimate player who died this
past summer after having played for Connecticut 2008 thru the 2010
season.
We've got 7 teams committed to attending the Big East
Tournament....and UConn is working on some sort of tribute to their
fallen brother.....but for starters, the UOA is naming the event after
him.

other than the obvious "CHEEPNESS" reasons. and even the socalled
"voluteer" observers at nationals are paid to be there (maybe not
directly but players DO pay). so how does it matter whether or not
the money that funds that facilitation goes towards travel and housing
costs or is just pure profit for local observers?
personally i feel that observers might actually take a little more
pride in their job if they were getting paid.........and it would make
for built in accountability, no?
fyi.....as per current usau poll 19 voted to pay them and 12 voted to
keep them as volunteers. how does that work with only 26 voters (i
guess some people voted for both????)
so again, could someone please explain to me WHAT THE FUCKING
DIFFERENCE WOULD BE (other than the obvious stulff i noted that
SUPPORTS PAYIN THEM). and save all the ideology please.

OK Toad, you are right, we should be calling out the UPA. Here is
something rather disturbing I read this morning...
Quoted from the Beagle thread, a post by Whitney...
"I know we tried to get bagels and bananas donated because we were
trying to make money for our ultimate team so we worked on getting
everything free so having to pay observers would have messed that up."
I took a look at the sanctioned tournaments page on the usau webpage.
There were two tournaments I was able to find a little more
information on, Mixed Easterns and Mixed Labor day, both USAU
sanctioned tournaments (not calling these tournies out, just was able
to find info quickly about them). Easterns had an entry fee of $350
with 32 teams = $11,200. Labor day has 24 teams paying $400 =
$9,600. That is quite a chunk of change. I know field space is
rather expensive (although if someone has exact numbers that would be
very helpful). Then tournament ammenities such as food, water,
trainers, and the party would be the next largest expenses. Insurance
would probably have been included, but getting sanctioned by USAU
means that you can get your tournament USAU insured for $200. Other
than that I would think some administrative costs would be involved,
anything I am forgetting? Seems to me like paying observers fits very
well into the budget.
How much money are these tournaments making??? Are they raking in the
cash to pay for there seasons at the end of the tournament or are they
barely breaking even?
If USAU is non-profit, do we want the tournaments they are sanctioning
making a bunch of money? Shouldn't the budgets be sent to USAU or
even better published for everyone? If you are getting the benefits
of the insurance from USAU for a very cheap price (try independently
insuring your event, or don't have insurance and play that risk game),
then you shouldn't be able to profit from that tournament. If
anything the overage should go to USAU. No one has to sanction their
tournament, so if you want to make a profit you don't have to
sanction. The only real benefit to sanctioning is the insurance,
which is the money saver (other benefits according to the USAU
website: a desire to host an event which is affiliated and supported
by the national governing body, access to additional resources and
legitimacy.)
It sounds like people aren't sure they want to pay for observers, but
do you even know what you are paying for now?

on there recent minutes it sais something about usau aggressively
alighning themselves with organizations using experimental rules.
i wonder if theyve even made one attempt to contact the UOA?????
another interesting thing i noticed was that in the jan 2010 board
minutes there was mention of the uoa and some networking with rule
revisions........yet in the june 2010 minutes it almost as if they
went out of there way NOT to mention them........like some high school
kid would ignore a recent break up.
ALSO
as far as PAYING OBSERVERS, when asked about usaus negitive attitude
concerning this modern process of compensation for services JOSH
SEAMEN RESPONDED......."as far as i remember, it wasnt that the board
didnt like the idea, it was that we thought there were better ways of
going about paying observers".....
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAT???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!??????????????
aside from this being such a cop out CROCK O SHIT answer its total
bullshit. go back and read the minutes you
politician......AND......why in the fuck wasnt there ANYTHING in the
minutes about alternative forms of payment.
PLEASE DONT INSULT US WITH SUCH BULLSHIT ANSWERS.

It looks like the Mid America Conference Tournament IS going to
happen!
5 teams are committed and Ohio University is working to reserve their
fields for the weekend of Oct 2-3!
So far the teams attending are....
host Ohio Univ
SUNY Buffalo
Western Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Ball State
Bowling Green seems to be on the verge of committing....
I've gotten letters of interest from...
Central Michigan
Northern Illinois
Toledo
and Kenyon is waiting in the wings for an open spot!
If there's anyone interested in observing games out yonder the weekend
of Oct 2-3...contact me directly!
Thanks
