So Mexico is sending both Open and Women's teams to Japan, or they were until sadly they got hit by a scam artists and now the women's team is in jeopardy of not making the trip because of the loss of a large portion of funding for tickets.

That's disgusting. Would be a shame for the team to miss out on an opportunity to make worlds.

Hopefully there are plenty of people out here in the ultimate world who can share this and help out with a few dollars each. If 3,000 people can just donate $3, that should help cover the losses!

NexGen Ultimate just donated a $100 and we encourage others to donate as well. Everyone deserves to play ultimate. It's always unfortunate when someone's good faith gets taken advantage of and even more so when it happens within the ultimate community. Good luck to the Mexican Women's team and we wish you all the best.

So...are we sure this isn't a scam?

I don't really doubt it, but it seems like a good idea to check.

Anyone have ultimate friends in Mexico that can check the legitimacy?

I honestly thought the same thing.

Would've been more comfortable using a kickstarter campaign.

True. Checked into it before donating. Nicky Smith is who she says she is, which is a 7 year ultimate player out of Australia who is taking a year off from teaching to help build the women's ultimate program in Mexico.

Definitely not a scam. I have played with both the coach and some of the Mexican women at tournaments.

Nicky traveled through Columbia and Mexico a few years ago and held coaching clinics for the teams.

She went back this year to help them prepare for Worlds and then this setback occurred.

I can't speak for Nicky, but probably the reason she didn't use kickstart or some other funding platform was because the people involved never heard of it. I had to google it just now to find out what you were referring to.

The Beth Coltman Memorial Tournament will gladly donate $100 to the Mexican National teams.

Old Sag had a blast with them in Prague!

... need a pickup for the open team?

Good Luck Mexico.

cheers,

Skyd Magazine included an article on this. http://skydmagazine.com/2012/04/spirit-foul-help-mexico-get- to-worlds/

Having played down in Mexico with many of the Mexican team members (both male and female), I really hope the ultimate community can get behind them and help out. A $5 or $10 donation would go a long way if we get 1,000 or 2,000 people to help. For many people, that is a small amount of money that would simply be a couple of beers, but together, this would help this team enormously.

I don't think any of the mexican team/coach are actually on RSD. I have sent a message to the coach asking if they can update the website with the latest total.

...and you get better by playing better teams. But in some cases, the gap is so wide that it's not beneficial for anyone I think.

That could only be determined by the team. Do they feel they have improved as a team and as individuals by playing against teams and players that have developed over many years through great ultimate programs.

They can also take what they have observed from other teams back home and use that to help raise the level of ultimate at home.

For those that remember this thread, the coach, Nicky, has started to put together some video of the experience of bringing the team together for Worlds.

Into and Part 1 were up this morning on youtube.
