Start the region specific chatter up.

From the looks of the format and rankings the Carolina Section should come out as:

Pool A:
1. UNC
3. USC
6. NC St
7. App St

Pool B:
2. UNCW
4. Clemson
5. ECU
8. Duke
9. CofC

Top 2 from each pool round out the top four, and the bottom 5 finish with pool play to decide the final 3 bids, totaling 7.

I haven't looked into any other section, but UNC and UNCW seem to be a clear top 2 with USC looking solid. From what I've seen, it almost looks up for grab at the bottom, but having 7 bids for 9 teams kind of helps.

VA sectionals should be interesting this weekend with just 3 bids. I think UVA, VT, and JMU have to be the clear favorites but maybe George Mason or William and Mary can play spoiler. Honestly though other than what I'd expect to be a good finals matchup between UVA and VT I don't see a lot of excitement.

Looks like NC State is seeded over ECU due to H2H win at QCTU.

Looks like VA ended up with 4 bids, so the battle for 4th should be pretty solid

The best of the five teams that are competing in D-1II Carolina conferences is Wake Forest and they went to D-III nationals last year. Davidson, Elon, UNC-Asheville, and Furman haven't had much success against D-I teams this season.

Alll D-III teams declined to pursue a D-I Regionals bid, so those two
bids were reallocated: one each to Colonial and Virginia, the next two
Conferences on the waitlist.

What players should I be watching at AC Regionals? I've got some
ballets to cast and haven't seen many of the teams play yet this
year. Hype your team's best players here so I know who to watch.

Anyone know if Josh Smith from VT is healthy? I heard after ACCs he was out for the year but I have no idea if that's true or not.

Dave, I'd rather hype other teams' players than my own, if that's all right with you.

Players that have been a particular joy to watch and/or play against this season:
Tommy Lamar from UNC-W
Justin ? from App State
Chuck Turner from USC

Players that I hope to see more of before the season is over:

-Thomas S-M from UNC (has he taken a step up from last year? Can he lead his team past their Carolina sectionals curse and make it to nationals at their first regional tournament since 2009?)

-Davidson Girard (Freshman, Maryland) Is this kid as good as he looked in high school, and has Maryland found a way to utilize his talent?

-Everyone on UVA. Historically, one of my favorite teams to watch, yet have had really poor results in the second half of the season. It can't possibly be because of experience. Look at all of the seniors and grad students on their roster: http://scores.usaultimate.org/scores/#college-open/team/1220

The roster that shows up on a team's score reporter page has to be updated manually. I'm not sure where the date shown for last date modified comes from. The roster on our score reporter page is not up to date either.

Word on the street is that William & Mary beat George Mason on Saturday AND in the Sunday game-to-go at Virginia conference championships, and UVA/VT/JMU were the top three in some order. Anyone have additional details on Sunday play?

(sorry if spelled any wrong):

UNC - Thomas Sayre-McCord, Christian Johnson, Tristian ???
UNCW - Tommy Lamar
UVa - Roy Matthews, Ian Toner
Clemson - James Cox
USC - Van Thiel, Andy Moore
App St - Micah Hood, Justin Allen
NCSU - Drew Moore, Casey Haigh, Brandon Jones
CofC (if they make it) - Adam "Brodi" Bailey, Caleb Hartsell
Duke - Charlie Furst, Cameron Albin
ECU - Mark Saba? Leigh?....are they still playing? haha
VaTech - Little Washbourne
JMU - I have no idea, but they won sectionals so check em out!

Ok thats all Ive got. I need to watch more college ultimate other

At Virginia Conferences JMU showed up firing on all cylinders both
days. With an older more experienced team and sporting a coach to
help keep them focused (a chronic problem for past JMU teams) they
were able to knock off both 2nd seeded VT and top seeded UVA to take
home the conference crown, their first since 2007.
JMU is led by #30 Kyle Fredericks: really fast, great at poaching and
baiting d's. once jmu gets the turn he controls the disc for their d-
line offense
#99 Jordan Albro: lefty o-line handler, facilitates their offense.
Gets open at will up line which seems to be a cornerstone of the jmu
offense
#4 Ben ?: Athlete, wins 50-50 discs that jmu puts up to him. Great
downfield man defense, got at least one layout d in the finals.
and #25 ??: HUGE pulls. Best pulls out of the entire conference last
weekend, really gave their defense an advantage.

UVa played well on Saturday only to come out flat and undisciplined
against JMU in the finals. UVa's cutters seemed to be cutting not at
top speed, and their handlers turfed several force side in cuts and
overthrew dumps on several occasions. They recovered to sneak by VT
in the hard cap.
UVA is led by: #9 Ian Toner: O-line handler, great break throws and a
dangerous handler when he controls the pace of the game with quick
throws.
#21 Brian Kiernan: Does a little bit of everything for UVA depending
on the situation. Smart player, great hucks and versatility.
#3 Aaron Mullins: O-line cutter, constantly open under.
#33 Roy Matthews: Defender who usually takes the other teams stud and
has a great ability to limit or contain them.
#12 Jacob Merlin: Handler defender who takes on other teams best
thrower/squirreliest player

VT runs a zone that frustrates offenses since their 4-man cup forces
to the middle of the field and their athletic wings are able to make
plays if the disc does get around/through the cup
They are led by
#4 John Andrukonis (?): Main handler, always open as the dump reset
and dangerous break throws.
#15 Josh Smith: Crazy atheltic defender, making jaw-dropping plays.
Also has a growing arsenal of throws, especially backhands.
#29 Red Ron: Mark in their cup, also runs their d-line offense on a
turnover

W&M had an up and down weekend losing to a team they'd never lost to
before (VCU) but also avenging a loss to George Mason to get into
regionals.
Led by: #5 Andrew Fickley: Lefty, great thrower who does a good job of
attacking defenses with his quick throw and go's.
#? Cody Johnston: Versatile player for W&M, smart player who can run
the offense if Fickley is covered
#0 Aric Mills: Loves the endzone, big, solid cutter for W&M.

Congrats to all the teams that made it through. The way this
conference finished up should make seeding tough since the USAU
rankings had VT first (26th), JMU 2nd (38th) and UVA 3rd (43rd).
Should make for an interesting region. Let us know how the other 2
conferences play out

I would say the top 6 seeds are pretty much locked in. Georgetown has to be above Maryland and I'd put Delaware above Clemson too. So 7-10 goes something like Delaware, Gtown, Clemson, Maryland. You could probably argue for Maryland over Clemson for the 9 seed too based on common opponents although Clemson does have the early season win. Looking forward to hearing about Carolina sectionals and how good USC really is. Anyone have a report from Colonial?

Toucansam,

Good catch with Maryland/Georgetown. What was your reasoning for your 7-10? The only common opponent I could find was a January 21 loss to SUNY Buffalo.

I seeded 7-10 according to EOS rankings below, with Maryland dropping down due to a H2H loss versus Clemson and finishing third at their conference, and Delaware and Georgetown switching due to conference results (full disclosure: I 'm the coach for Clemson University).

What was your reasoning for your 7-10? The only common opponent I could find was a January 21 loss to SUNY Buffalo.

NC State has the win over UNCW (which Clemson, Delaware, G-town and Maryland all have losses against), which could perhaps help them crack the top 10 as well, depending on the relative strength of rankings versus common opponents.

Neither Delaware nor Georgetown have played Clemson, both beat Buffalo who Clemson lost to and both have much better scores against UNCW than Clemson does. So I would definitely put Delaware at 7 and Georgetown at 8. NC State does have the win over UNCW but Maryland hasn't played UNCW (just UNC) and Maryland has much better performance in the common opponent games (NC State has losses to GT, Duke, and UMass and worse scores in general in similar wins and losses) so I think NC State has to take the 11 seed. Between Clemson and Maryland in the 9/10 spot it's more of a toss up since Clemson does have the two point win at ACCUCs but Maryland has the better record against common opponents with wins over Buffalo and BC and the higher end of season ranking. Depends on what criteria are weighed more heavily.

1. South Carolina
2. UNC
3. UNCW
4. JMU
5. UVA
6. Va Tech
7. Delaware
8. Georgetown
9. Clemson/Maryland
10. Clemson/Maryland
11. Nc State
12. Towson
13. Duke
14. William and Mary
15. GW
16. CofC

Pool A (UNC, USC, ECU, App State):
This pool did not start until 1PM, allowing most teams to sleep in their own beds on Friday. Rounds 1 and 2 went to seed, although both UNC (13-10 vs. ECU) and USC (13-11 vs. App State) survived close games in the first round.
Round 3 saw USC pull off the upset win over UNC 13-11 and App State beat ECU 13-8 for the 3v4 upset.
I watched the tail end of the USC-UNC game, and USC's formidable cutters (Jacob, Chris, etc.) moved the disc very effectively while Andy was uncoverable from the reset position. Thomas Sayre-McCord was notably sidelined by the end of Saturday with a knee injury and did not play the rest of the weekend.
Pool B
9:00 Round 1: UNC-W v. C of C, Clemson v. Duke
UNC-W comes away with the 13-8 win in a relatively high-turnover game.

Clemson and Duke finish their game in about 60 minutes. Both teams display very clean offense in the first half, with each team ceding one break, and 5 turnovers total for the two teams. Clemson received and ended the first half up 7-6. Charlie from Duke played particulary well in the first half, with a number of impressive scores and layout grabs.

Clemson breaks to start the first half with a huge huck from Michael Martin to Will Gordon, and teams trade offensive scores to 11-9. Clemson breaks to 12-9, and Graham Temples nearly catches a first-throw layout Callahan that is dislodged on impact. Clemson scores without incident to end the game 13-9. James Cox catches 3 scores and throws 4 assists, while freshman John Lipsey catches 4 scores.

11:00 Round 2: UNC-W v NC State, C of C vs. Duke
C of C lost to Duke 13-8.

NC State and UNC-W showcased a very entertaining, gritty game that lasted nearly the entire two hours. UNC-W was up early in the first half, but NC State battled back and took a break or two late to go into halftime up 7-6. As the game stayed close, the two teams grew increasingly contentious, with many hard fouls and disagreements that kept the lone observer busy.

I did not see the end of the game, but I know that NC State persevered to win 13-11. Truman Nottingham had some beautiful hucks for UNC-W and their freshman puller played very well, but Tommy Lamar was the best player on the field for UNC-W. NC State had great success with their trapping 4-man cup, sometimes packing a 5th man into the box and daring teams to go over the top against them. They also had an excellent game in the air.

1:00 Round 3: Clemson v. C of C, NC State v. Duke
Both games ended the first half with the higher seed up by 3 or 4 points. NC State took care of business quickly and won 13-5, while C of C hung around and battled back from 8-3 to 13-9 in a sloppy, high-turnover game. Charleston hucked first and asked questions later, and had more success with man-to-man defense than zone.

3:00 Round 4: Clemson v. NC State, UNC-W v. Duke
Clemson went up early v. NC State: an early Wolfpack huck collided with a light pole and led to Clemson's first break, and

Clemson went up 6-0 off of 4 defensive blocks or pressure turnovers from Will Gordon on Brandon Jones. NC State got on the board with a huge Chris Kelly sky to make it 6-1, and Clemson's offense took the game into halftime. NC State was broken twice out of halftime to make it 9-1, and a Clemson receiver dropped a game winning pass in the endzone at 12-3. NC State gained their lone defensive turnover and break at 12-4 with a Chris Kelly sky D in the 4-man cup. Clemson's O closed out the game to 13-5

Graham Temples caught 6 of Clemson's 8 breaks and Connor Thompson's towering blady pulls around the light pole pinned 'pack handlers deep in their own territory. NC State ran a lot of vertical stack, using the break-side lane as a track to send their speedy players deep, but really struggled when they were unable to get the disc to Brandon.

Duke trailed UNC-W the entire game but the game lasted well into the cap due to very long points, overthrows, near misses, and athletic blocks. Although it appeared UNC-W tried to rest some of their tight rotation in the second half, 10+ minute points drained the players that were out there for both teams.

5:00 Round 5: UNC-W vs. Clemson, NC State v. C of C

Going into the final round, UNC-W needed to win to reach bracket play (or NC State would advance) and win by at least 13-9 if they were to retain the 1st seed. Clemson had multiple chances to break while up 1-0 and 2-1 but failed to convert. UNC-W broke to 2-3 and 3-5, but Clemson regained one break and received going upwind 5-6, working to the goal line before dropping a clap-catch in the force-side corner. UNC-W scored to take half and ran away with the game in the second half to win 13-5.
NC State took care of business against C of C but could not control their own destiny, as UNC-W and Clemson advanced on point differential.

so is it possible to be on an All-Region team without making Regionals?

It's possible, but pretty unusual. You usually have to be the best player on a front-runner that gets unexpectedly knocked out. I believe Thomas SM made it first or second team in 2010 and 2011 despite UNC missing regionals both years. Who were you thinking?

following this (clemson being 9, umd 10) and the format manual...

pool A:
USC, G'town, Towson, Duke

pool B:
UNC, Delaware, NCSU, W&M

pool C:
UNCW, VT, Maryland, George Wash

pool D:
JMU, Virginia, Clemson, CofC

early speculation, but still fun
