The elected Board seats have been filled, but there is still an appointed spot to be filled. Check out the recent announcement, if you're interested in nominating someone for consideration for an appointed position. Another chance to get involved. Posted on the USAU front page.

But the deadline is Sunday, November 21, so act soon:

why should we when we KNOW that it is highly probable they will just
appoint another "one of their own" (sz). i mean, couldnt they throw
us progressives a bone and just take it upon themselves to appoint ONE
PERSON that can and will represent us........the more progressive
portion of the membership?

this is the admins opportunity to show they ARENT
partisin.........WILL THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY. i'm
bettin the house they wont......in fact, my guess is that they will
appoint another sz in progressives clothing.......just to throw us
progressives a curve ball.

It would be a great benefit to the sport if even a small fraction of the people willing to spend their time complaining (on RSD or elsewhere) would spend a little time taking advantage of opportunities to help USAU improve and to improve the sport. Identifying problems is really easy. Coming up with solutions is often not that hard, but it takes a little extra effort.

Tons of ways to get involved and make a difference. E-mail directly, if you'd like specific suggestions.

One previous appointee came from outside ultimate, didn't he? Can you
share the USAU Board's vision on using this spot?

To balance the board by gender and geographic area, what about a woman player from the South?

Technically speaking you can't appoint a board member based on "race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or national origin" (from the bylaws). Basically, the first rule of appointing a female board member is you don't talk about appointing a female board member?

I hope these "appointed" seats are not used to add more Ultimate
players. They are an opportunity to find and nominate non-Ultimate
players with a great deal of expertise in sports organizations and
strategic planning.

that was a rather obvious hint about some people who are doing some cool things regarding the development of the women's game down South. Three or four of them would make excellent candidates.

This group is being more innovative than anyone else at the present moment.

I don't really know anything about the Board's vision on this, beyond what is in the minutes from the 2009 Summer meeting, so I'm speaking on behalf of myself and my research only (as usual):

http://www.usaultimate.org/assets/1/Page/USAU%20June%202010% 20Board%20of%20Directors%20Meeting%20-%20Final%20Version.pdf

The general idea appeared to be to help ensure expertise in critical areas, as this is something the election process would not be certain to accomplish.

colin......how would you feel about welcoming j mac or steve hubbard
to the board.......since they were the only two canidates that were
representing the progressive people in this org. dont you think it
would be good to have a desenting opinion on that bod for discussions.

Hi Jim, you got me... sort of. My mistake was "creating" a post with a
question I had because of the few trollers who enjoy their silly
games. I still review RSD NOSPAM every now and then and reply to a
post sometimes. In this case, the "appointed" board seat IMO is a
great opportunity for the organization to attract very high level
people from outside the Ultimate community who can help in areas they
are experienced in and we are not.

I get what you are saying - a board with no muggles would seem to
systematically eliminate the potential contributions of any non-
ultimate players. But I think that misses the mark a little bit. The
critical thing is that this new person should bring a skill set or
body of knowledge not currently represented by anybody on the board,
whether or not they are an ultimate player. For example, I'd like to
see a person with a track record as a successful online marketing
manager be nominated. I care not whether that person is an ultimate
player or not.

I understand your point, but I would go a bit further. A non-Ultimate
player will bring a different perspective to the board and hopefully
expertise of working in another sports organization that is farther
down the road of gaining mainstream recognition. IMO it would be
harder to think "outside the box" if you have been living in that box
for many years.
