Introducing RSD No Spam at http://www.rsdnospam.com
From the name of the site you can probably figure out what it does. Click the link, check it out, let me know what you think.
A list of FAQs is available here: http://www.rsdnospam.com/index.php?t=msg&th=11057
I'm anticipating that I'll need to spend some extra money in the near future to keep this hosted and free so please use the "Donate" link on the site generously.
If you have other questions, post them on the forum or here and I'll add them to the FAQ list. Thanks to everyone that helped test out the site and make sure things worked as planned. Hopefully we found most of the problems so that things work smoothly for now. If you're interested in helping to moderate the spam on the site so that we can keep it spam-free, email me at admin@rsdnospam.com and I can get you set up.

Boy if I understand this correctly that is one elegant solution to our
little spam issue, well done.

It does a pretty good job of getting rid of the spam but does require some moderation. Things have been running smoothly up to this point so I think users will be happy with the site.
RSD No Spam also does two-way syncing so you never have to visit the spam-plagued Google Groups site if you don't want to.

we need to sign-up? Thanks for the effort, Dave.
If you've posted on RSD in the past year or so you should be able to go here: http://www.rsdnospam.com/index.php?t=reset and enter the email address that you posted from to have the password emailed to you. If you have any trouble let me know.
If you've posted from an account that had a fake email to get rid of spam, you can email me and I'll change the email on your account and reset the password for you.

Dave, I love rsdnospam. Its already a favorite on my browser...
The one thing I've noticed, after trying the bottom tree view in this
forum, is that its not quite as use-able as the left tree view on
google groups. I have to scroll down, select the message I want to
view, then scroll back up.
But still, rsd is the way discussion ought to be and rec.sport.disc
used to be. Thanks for putting time into this.

Agreed on the tree-view. Something I'll look into fixing in the future. Thanks for the feedback, Ben.

Love it.
Agreed, hopefully people can get out of the habit of bumping, it's pretty annoying. With no spam I would hope that it won't be as big of a problem.

I haven't explored RSDNoSpam too much yet, but I'm noticing that there
are messages on RSDNoSpam that aren't showing up on RSD. Is that how
it's supposed to be?

That's not how it's supposed to be. If you have some examples I can look into, I would be very interested.
One example I found was on this thread
(RSD) http://groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.disc/browse_thread/ thread/e0c8e23240665c67/263a4b85ae54755f?lnk=raot#263a4b85ae 54755f
(RSDNoSpam) http://www.rsdnospam.com/index.php?t=msg&th=10575&st art=0&
In this case my best guess is that Google Groups is suppressing what it thinks are duplicate posts while my software is simply posting everything. If you have some more examples I would love to look into it and see if this pattern hold or if there is something bigger going on.
Sometimes, as noted in the FAQ, the server we use to post to USENET doesn't respond correctly. Since the service is free we can't really afford to pay for a 100% reliable solution but so far the current solution has been working pretty well. I'll definitely look into different strategies to try and make things more reliable.

my posts never post to the message group formerly known as RSD...
also, i'm against limiting people from posting because they post a lot, in response to anything bordering on a certain topic. if we limit those people, i would like to limit those that annoy me when they post.

What would you need to speed up the posting from rsdnospam to rsdspam? What would it cost?
Charles
Speeding up the posting is kind of out of my control. Once the post gets into the USENET system it's up to Google to put it on their Google Groups page.
Making the posting more reliable is the next issue I'm going to be addressing and I'm not sure how much time that will take. Once I have some more time to devot to it I'll be able to track down the problems that users like Mimmo are having with posts not getting back to Google's RSD. Hopefully some small changes will fix things but I won't know until I can identify the problem.

Great job. How much control do you have on the forum? That is, could
you limit any one person to a maximum number of posts in one month
which would really help with anyone highjacking threads with huge
number of posts.
I don't have any plans for limiting posting for anyone unless they start posting blatant spam that is unrelated to the topic(s) of RSD. Beyond that this is an open forum for anyone to post their thoughts to.

Dave:
I created a thread last night on the Henry handball ("One good thing about ultimate") and it still hasn't appeared on Google RSD 12 hours later.
Do you know for sure where this is breaking down? Are all posts definitely getting to USENET? Are there feeds to USENET that cost money that could speed up the posting process?
I know Google Groups has no API (Google hasn't done itself proud on Google Groups in general... it's pretty weak), but maybe there's an alternative way of getting things posted?
Thanks.

Starting to look into these problems. I'm going to be making some test posts throughout the day today.
