Dear Ultimate Community,

The University of Texas Women's Ultimate program and the Ultimate
Players League of Austin (UPLA) are proud to host the sixth annual
women's division of College Centex. This tournament has historically
been the premiere spring college tournament and we look forward to
continuing that tradition. Although we will not be working with
Cultimate this year, UT Women's Ultimate and UPLA are dedicated to
providing a high quality, well-run event.

This year, we are expanding to 24 college women's teams in order to
accommodate the growing number of elite women's programs. The
majority of the bids will be allocated based on historical program
strength and/or recent Regional and National finishes. There will
also be several bids awarded to promote the growth of women's
ultimate, both in the South Region and among up-and-coming teams
across the nation. Coaches and captains in every Region have been
consulted in the bid allocation process. We have done our research
and are confident that we will be bringing you the best possible
competition.

Invitations to Centex will be sent out by Friday, December 5, 2008.
We are requesting responses to our invitations by 5:00pm CST on
Friday, December 12, 2008. Bids not accepted by the deadline will be
filled by a second round of invitations to teams on our ranked waiting
list. We will be updating the list of committed teams on our website
daily at: http://centex09.texasultimate.org. When all of the spots
have been filled, we will make an official announcement with a list of
all of the teams that will be in attendance. We anticipate that this
process will be complete by Tuesday, December 23, 2008.

As usual, Centex will feature the following amenities:
* The best competition in college women's ultimate
* Field food
* Trainers
* Discs / Gear
* Trained observers
* Bbq dinner
* Possible women's showcase game

When: March 28-29, 2009
Where: UT Intramural Fields - Austin, TX
Teams: 24 Women's College Teams
Cost: $325 per team
Bids: By invitation only

Please feel free to contact us with questions or comments at:

Is men's Centex still being hosted with help from Cultimate?

Great to see the growth, keep it up!

Men's Centex will be hosted the previous weekend, March 21-22.
Details are still being worked out. The driving factor between having
our tournaments on two separate weekends was a limitation on field
space. The UT Intramural Fields can host a maximum of 40 teams
without compromising the schedule (multiple byes) or the size of the
fields. Given the growth in both the men's and women's divisions over
the past few years, we felt that we could best serve the ultimate
community by hosting our tournaments back-to-back and allowing more
teams to attend. Spring break is the weekend between for many
schools, so we hope that many teams will stick around for the week to
hang out and watch and play some quality ultimate.

Dear Ultimate Community,

A number of inquiries have been made about our reasoning for hosting
Women's College Centex separate from Cultimate and on a different
weekend than Open College Centex. We have spent countless hours over
the past few months discussing the possibilities within the Texas
Ultimate program as a whole, as well as with college captains and
coaches around the country. We weighed out a litany of different
factors and we are in full understanding of the implications that our
decision has on Centex, as well as on both open and women's teams
around the country.

Because this decision affects the ultimate community as a whole, we
would like to share a few of the driving factors behind our decision
with you:

1. Women's Ultimate
College Centex represents the pinnacle of our efforts to build the
women's ultimate community and we are prepared to give the women's
division the attention and respect it deserves. We believe that each
and every detail should be thoughtfully planned out, from the
invitation process to the seedings and format to the weekend-of
logistics of running the tournament. All of this is critical to
running a successful tournament that meets the needs of its
participants. One of our program's goals this year is to continue to
develop college women's ultimate. We believe that by providing
women's teams with more opportunities to play against quality
competition, we will continue to push our sport to the next level. We
have run a number of high-caliber women's tournaments in the South and
Midwest over the past two years and we are proud to be expanding the
number of teams at Centex in order to accommodate the growing number
of elite teams. In addition to this, we have plans to develop a
women's club division as part of Centex in the future.

2. Field Space and Date
The UT Intramural Fields can host a maximum of 40 teams without
compromising the schedule (multiple byes) or the size of the fields.
Given the growth in both the men's and women's divisions over the past
few years, we felt that we could best serve the ultimate community by
hosting our tournaments back-to-back and allowing more teams to
attend. By moving to a different weekend than Open College Centex, we
are able to expand the size of the women's division. Additionally,
spring break is the weekend between for many schools, so we hope that
teams will stick around for the week to hang out and watch and play
some quality ultimate.

3. Community
Club and College Centex have traditionally been the marquee events of
Austin Ultimate. The Texas Women's Ultimate program has received a
tremendous amount of support from the Austin Ultimate community over
the years and with the creation of UPLA, we have the in-house
capability to run a high-quality tournament. We have a very talented
group of Austinites who are passionate about making Centex the best
tournament in the nation and we are excited to have these individuals
working with us in order to build both this tournament as well as the
local ultimate community. There are tremendous benefits to having a
positive relationship for both college teams as well as local leagues
and club teams; we look forward to continuing to build the
relationship between Texas Women's Ultimate and UPLA.

4. Fundraising
Centex is our primary program fundraiser. Partnering with UPLA means
that nearly all of the profits will go toward the Texas Women's
Ultimate program. This is a significant amount of money, compared to
what we would make partnering with an outside entity. Last year, our
A team flew to five tournaments. Because of our isolated geographical
location, the costs of playing at a competitive level are extremely
high and Centex helps us to offset some of these costs.

5. Competition
The majority of the bids will be allocated based on historical program
strength and/or recent Regional and National finishes. There will
also be several bids awarded to promote the growth of women's
ultimate, both in the South Region and among up-and-coming teams
across the nation. Coaches and captains in every Region have been
consulted in the bid allocation process. We have done our research
and are confident that we will be bringing you the best possible
competition. We have also done a tremendous amount of legwork getting
buy-in from the top women's teams in the country to ensure that as
always, Centex will be the most competitive event of the spring
season.

In short, we are pursuing what we believe to be the best possible
option for women's ultimate and for Centex as the premiere spring
tournament. We are NOT opposed to working with Cultimate in the
future and we plan to attend Stanford Invite, whether or not it is run
by Cultimate. We appreciate everyone's interest in and support of
Centex and Texas Women's Ultimate and we look forward to seeing all of
you on the field soon.

Sincerely,
Texas Women's Ultimate
Ultimate Players League of Austin (UPLA)

But there will still be a dance-off, right?

I gotta say that splitting the tourney is worse than you realize for
some people. I can't justify travel to Centex twice. As a
photographer (and perhaps this is true for merchandise and video too)
splitting the tourney means that one or both of the Centex tourneys
are going to have to be skipped. That sucks because I haven't missed
a Centex since 2001.

Tourneys rise slowly and fall quickly. I hope you all manage to keep
this together without the immense clout of a quality tournament
organizer - Skip Sewell. A well run tourney (like Centex since 2004)
seems like it runs itself. But, it doesn't.

Best,
Matt

That last paragraph came out wrong. I did not intend to take anything
from Texas Ultimate or UPLA concerning their abilities to run a
tournament. I did intend to praise Skip Sewell and Cultimate, who
regardless of other issues, are outstanding tourney organizers.

This tourney, Centex, is dear to my heart and I have a long history
with it -- as an organizer, a player, a photographer and admirer. I
hate to see it dissected -regarless of how carefully that dissection
is completed.

The idea of going to "Centex" and not seeing/shooting any men's games
(or women's games, depending on the weekend) is hard to swallow. It's
stealing something from this fan of women's and men's ultimate. In
the end, I suppose it's about the players and the teams, but I wish
the fans/supporters were in the equation too.

Since today was our projected date to announce teams for Women's
College Centex, we wanted to provide the ultimate community with an
update.

We have secured 31/32 teams for Women's College Centex. This list
includes the reigning champion, 2/2 finalists, 3/4 semifinalists, and
7/8 quarterfinalists from last year's UPA College Championships. We
are in the process of securing the final team and we will make an
announcement when the list of teams is finalized. We have consulted
with formats experts and coaches and captains across the country and
we will be using a tiered format to guarantee teams as many at-level
games as possible, while still giving everyone a chance to win the
tournament.

We appreciate all of your support and interest throughout this
process. As always, please feel free to contact us with questions and/
or comments at: collegecentex (at) gmail dot com

Sincerely,
Texas Women's Ultimate
