No Third Place Games?

I just found out that there are no 3rd place games @ UPA Nats for the two
divisional semi losers. Why not? They play out the rest of the bracket,
and last I heard Bronze was still an impressive medal to win.

What gives?

Seriously,

Time and time again it is said that the format is for finding the #1
team... well so are the Olympics and most sports world championship.
It seems that "making semis" is the definition of a top team for the
year... why isn't 3rd place played out?

There is an entire thread on all-time best teams and cities and the
important stat is finishing in Semis or better:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.disc/browse_thread/ thread/3f95ca4ad064ed11#

It would only be the 3rd game on Saturday or a percursor to finals on
Sunday. Start awarding Bronze UPA!!

worlds is frsibee's olympics, they have bronze medals and i'm proud to
have one hanging in my bedroom.

upa, however, is the "pro" level of ulty and they don't give broze in
USA professional sports. there isn't an athlete there that cares
about being 3rd, unless they didn't really think they had a chance to
win in the first place. what would be the point?

Or just give the "bronze" to the team that loses in semis to the team
which goes on to win.

"Giving" someone a medal after losing in semis would be trivial and
pretty pointless. If it isn't earned no one will ever care about it.
What is the point of playing out all of the other seeds if we don't
care about 3rd/4th place? THAT seems stupid.

Do we play out all the other places because we only care about
strength bids? Or do we play because we want to have more games and
provide rankings for future competition. The clear metric for teams
performance is making Semis or better (for some at least..)

I do understand the point that the NBA doesn't have a 3rd place game,
and there isn't a 3rd place World Series. But when the teams are
already there... cleats on... with a day before their planes leave
(because you know teams that made semis planned their trip to make and
play in finals) it is just strange NOT to play.

This isn't a "USA professional" sport either, a Canadian team would
have been in this 3rd place game last year.

fine, then change "USA professional" to "North American professional"
and corey's point still holds. it's not like they play out for 3rd in
basketball
or hockey, both of which have canadian franchises. pretty sure he
wasn't slighting canadians there....i don't recall goat (or furious,
in years
past) wanting to play such a 3/4 game and being denied b/c the
other (US) team didn't want to play...

I think the policy is you only have to play out a game if it leads to
another game, or the outcome impacts strength bids

For example, in mixed, neither the 3rd place, 5th place (regional re-
match) nor the 7th place game was played out.

Few (no?) teams that made it to semis would want to play out a third
place game. It's meaningless.

Thank you captaion obvious, I'm aware that Hockey, Basketball, and
Baseball all have Canadian teams, and sure the "policy" is all about
the strength bids. So 1/3 of the games played at Nationals are ONLY so
we can see who gets to come back next year? Now THAT is meaningless.

If there was an award for 3rd you think Semifinal teams would just
choose to walk away? Sure maybe a few... you never know.

It is silly to compare Ultimate to a professional sport, if you
justification was that the NCAA basketball tournament has a final four
and the losers in the final four don't play for 3rd would hold a
little more water... because the players and fans are in the location
already. But the Dodgers playing the Red Sox for 3rd... yeah thats
silly... I agree

We are a sport that prides ourself on being different, yet we always
compare ourselves to sports we don't even come close to measuring up
to... now that is silly.

It's only meaningless because it has never been done,
