Though not ultimate specific....I'm thinking the invention of the
Flashflight disc deserves some sorta honorable mention.

The website says it was unveiled in 2002.

I thought Sockeye's win over Bravo in the finals a few years ago was
pretty epic as well--not as epic as Fury's win, of course, but
probably the most fun Open final in the past few years

Also, Steve Finn's Callahan, without a doubt

I'd say, in no particular order:

Beau jumps over a guy
Nord's play in the '01 college finals
Furious v. Dog semi's in '02
Pike's semi's run in '04
Florida's national title in '05(?)
Fury's comeback win in the Finals, winning their fourth straight
Finn's Callahan to win Natties.
Jam's Nationals run '08.
Vagabonds over Team USA Potlach '05
Chain's Nationals run '09

Zip's grab in the '05 Finals (Florida was '06) has to be in with the
Nord and Beau plays (and maybe his grab from this past year as well)
and that whole Colorado-Brown finals for that matter, amazing game,
huge star power.
Arizona's run to Nationals, Quarters finish and Kersh winning the
Callahan
And don't forget Condors over DoG was this decade
and Furious over Condors
Stanford faceless army '02

I'm prolly missing some

While not a single event, the shift from east coast domination in the
90s to west coast this past decade is noteworthy. Are we entering the
decade of the South?

I think Chain nailed it just right. They worked years to get there
and then they won it. That's a nice way to end the decade. Same
kudos to Jam, well done guys.

Winning nationals is a great achievement, but most probably does not
rate a "best of the decade" feat unless there was something special or
unique about it. Kudos to Chain and Jam, but I'm not sure how their
wins are any more special then most of the other national wins (except
to them). Being the first from the South does deserve some mention
though and it did bring honor to the great tradition of Chain
Lightning that goes back farther than most people know.

I think it's easy to pick the one that starts the decade. The Condors
win over DoG in the semifinals at '00 Nationals broke DoG's 6 year win
streak. A streak that the Ultimate community pretty much had assumed
would go on for much longer. The event that beat DoG for the first
time in any Nationals game in almost 7 years is one of the "best of
the decade."

If you look at it by division, college open was seemingly dominated by
the Central. 5 National Championships by the Central region in first
decade, rounding out the other champions Brown (twice), Colorado,
Florida, and the one west coast Stanford team. Don't see no west
coast domination there (except for studs from almost all of those
teams going to play for west coast club teams)

Player of the decade in my mind:

Men - Cruikshank vs. Grant vs. Nord vs. Chase vs. SammyCK vs. Zip

Women - Miranda vs. Gambler

why not?...i mean the stadium wasnt full but from what i saw of the
footage it seemed full enough to be impressive...specially when china
was playing...how many ultimate events have filled that many seats in
the past how ever many years? (its no disc olympics or whatever those
were, filling the rose bowl or something)....its not a major sporting
event where a stadium that size is sold out but come on now....

HOW ABOUT 40 FUCKIN YEARS AGO IN THE ROSE BOWL.........WITH AMERICAN
SPORTS FANS?????? it kills me how you people are in such the state of
denial as to ultimates regression in just about every way possible

Regressing from not existing prior to its inception... I'm not even
mad, that's amazing. Eat your heart out fastest growing sport in the

Steve Finn's Callahan to win nationals? Sorry, but no masters plays
should be on anyone's top ten list.

Fury's comeback has to be top ten of all time.

Jam and Chain winning is great, but many of the key guys on each
roster had been on the team for only a few years, so I'm not sure if
you can describe these wins as: "finally, after all these years, they
pulled it off." On the other hand, either of these runs could be top
10 for other reasons.

If we are including Team USA 2009, why not the team from 2005?

As for open player of the decade, I would like to hear explanations as
to how any guy is as good as Mike Grant. No one else had that deep
cutter/deep thrower deadly combo so down, and he got three rings with
a bunch of role players and only a couple of other stars.

I hear you *but* I just like to see teams win that have been pounding
away for years. I think a lot of the Jam guys had been around to get
smacked upside the head before they won it, Chain maybe not so much
but there is still the Hammond etc. core that connects back to the old
days. Fury could be the top story of the decade.

I had Grant on my short list (as anyone should). I would argue
against your last statement though. A bunch of those guys aren't
"stars" because they didn't play college in the US and therefore we
didn't hype them up as much. But given their performance I don't see
how anyone could look at their lineup as not being as deep as a
Sockeye-type roster where you know all the names. Cruickshank,
Lugsdin, Pottinger, Savage, all those guys did work out there.

As good as Grant was/is, I have a hard time saying with certainty that
he was more valuable to his team than Cruickshank. If we're talking
versatility and creating matchup problems, Chase and Sammy CK need to
be in that discussion as well.

"I had Grant on my short list (as anyone should). I would argue
against your last statement though. A bunch of those guys aren't
'stars' because they didn't play college in the US and therefore we
didn't hype them up as much."

I don't care about who was hyped up or who played in the U.S., so
please don't make incorrect assumptions about how I am assessing
players. I played against Furious from 1996-2003 and watched them
from 2004 to 2006. That's how I know them.

I don't mean to diss any of those guys. The role players from those
teams are champions; guy who knew how to do their job and win.
However, if you took the # 6 - # 16 players on the Furious teams from
2002, 2003 and 2005 and compared him to the # 6 - # 16 guys on Jam or
Sockeye, I think the Jam/Sockeye guys were a little better. They
certainly had better throws. Observing this is not an insult to
Furious; I think it actually goes to show what great teamwork they
had.

"But given their performance I don't see how anyone could look at
their lineup as not being as deep as a Sockeye-type roster where you

If you look at "performance" as "teamwork," you can absolutely say
that certain individuals on a championship team are not as good as
their counterparts on losing teams. Santonio Holmes was the superbowl
mvp. Did he even make the pro bowl?

"Cruickshank, Lugsdin, Pottinger, Savage, all those guys did work out
there."

I did say Mike Grant played with other stars.

"As good as Grant was/is, I have a hard time saying with certainty
that he was more valuable to his team than Cruickshank."

Cruickshank is the best qb of all time, but Furious did win nationals
without him. I don't think they ever won without Grant. Also, Grant
was in a different league of defender/receiver than Cruickshank, and
had great hucks.

Clearly one of the top ten feats of the decade was when a 48 year old
out of shape man with a torn miniscus, that everyone assumed was a
bitter old fool, a delusional wingnut or a washed up has-been few up
to Seattle and embarrassed the National Champions and in one fell
swoop proved all his naysayers wrong.

Where's the video Rob?

I think Chase has maybe won three nationals in three different
divisions, all in this decade? And also a gold at Worlds? And also
coached a Junior Worlds team that won worlds? I may be off on some of
these a bit.

Gambler would have to take that one too, winning multiple titles in
multiple divisions
