USAU Board candidates seem to think their Ultimate experiences are the most important factors for selecting Board members. However, USAU issues are now so complex and strategically focused that a person's professional experience and accomplishments are much more important. I hope all candidates update their statements to become a full bio.

The USAU is a business. The goal is to allow its members to have fun playing Ultimate at whatever level they desire. It is increasingly also aimed at exposing the sport to the public at large. This requires expertise way beyond being a good Ultimate player and volunteer.

Remember earlier this year when club teams were up in arms over the TCT tour format and USAU gave concessions, including a board position? Only 1 elite player submitted their name!!!!!!!!!! Seems there was a lot more bark than bite. Kudos to the Brian for running. It will be nice to have his representation on the board.

That is an incredibly narrow reading of this data point.
Other possibilities:
1) Elite teams talked and had an idea for someone that was mutually acceptable (especially with experience in mixed, open, and close contacts in women's).
2) Elite players share similar problems with the USAU system, so really any elite player would do the job reasonably well (thus not needing any competition).
3) Boo told people he was running, and other possible candidates self-assessed that they were unlikely to win and/or do a better job, thus eliminating the need for a run-off.

These are reasonable. Your conjecture is not.

it's not often I agree with you Joe but I do here. however, with the USAU guaranteeing whatever number of board spots to "elite" players the ultimate bio becomes relevant. why is it relevant? well, because USAU wants elite representation on the board. Why do they want this? I do not know. I would love to have it explained why there needs to be an elite player or players on the board. and am a little curious as to what "elite" is.

Bro, I listed 3 facts and analysis.

I'll consider one of your national groupthink theories when I start seeing games start on time.

I would wager they want an elite player on the board because one of the current primary goals, increasing exposure of the sport, is heavily tied to the highest level of play the game has to offer. ESPN and the general public are not going to sign up to watch Sectionals level teams and amateurish play. Having access to elite teams is paramount in showing an uninformed public what our sport is capable of and generating interest in becoming a devoted fan or player themselves. But USAU needs to have the elite teams and players on board to do this successfully, and this requires the input and consent of the elite community. Hence, a board spot reserved for a representative of that subsection of the ultimate player base.

i agree that that's likely "the reason" but i fail to see why the USAU needs an "elite" player on the board to push forward a plan to showcase elite ultimate. it seems like a smart, savvy person who is familiar with the business or marketing side of things would do just fine regardless of their level of ability on the field.

Yes but USAU needs to make sure the elite players are going to participate in whatever TCT format they come up with. As evident this spring when a large portion of elite teams were considering the NexGen league. USAU wants input from the elite to make sure their showcase players aren't going to walk away from them for greener pastures. Having the elite voice on the board will help USAU avoid the mis-steps like this spring with the excessive requirements.

The reason for elite athlete representation is because it is required by the USOC. The move was made to put USAU in line with their guidelines on board makeup.
