"The winning team will be invited to the North American Spirit Championships, if they maintain a high enough spirit score throughout the tournament."

is spirit score determined by your opponents?

If so, what happens if the team that loses in the finals gives the winning team a really low score, which puts them below the spirit score threshold.....thus, sending their own team to the spirit championships?

Sincerely curious how this all works.

--best of luck with this event.
it sounds awesome.

while i was the NC College Sectional Coordinator for several years.....i always called our sectional event....
'the state of North Carolina Championships'

.....because....North Carolina State championships'.....always seemed sort of NCState-centric.

and didn't want to call it "north carolina championships'.....because that sounded real UNC-centric....and that's just plain gross.

your event, the north carolina state championships.....sounds like something ncstate ought to be hosting.

hold on.....
this is a coed series?
not college?
coed?
and free to compete?
again...hold on....the 'free fall series'...costs $300 to compete in?

hold on again again.....coed...but "men & women"?...does "men & women" MEAN coed?

8 teams in one div....7 pool games and a final placement game, perhaps?
or 3 pool games, quarters, semis and finals and all consolation?
6 games for every team?...3 per day?

Knappy, the situation you are describing is completely counter to the whole idea of the Spirit Championships. And if it was found that a team was attempting to hurt their opponents in that way, they could face penalties up to having all of their game results negated and being banned from future participation. We hope that situation will never arise, but if it does, there will be a thorough investigation, including interviews after the fact with the TD and other captains.
This process will be followed anytime a team wins the State Championship, but doesn't meet the minimum spirit score threshold.

So far, your website seems to strongly hint that the idea of the championships is imaginary. With over half of the scheduled events supposedly already taking place, there doesn't seem to be a single team listed as even registering for an event, much less playing.

I tried to register a team, entering the coupon "free" in the section asked, but it won't let me go beyond that page. I'm signing my league team up for this, but there's no way I'm paying 300 dollars upfront for no details and a date. Can I have some more information, please? What's the gender format? ETC?

Whereas the spirit of answering the implied question of "have any of these tournaments actually happened?" is dead.

Speaking as someone who is in the business of renting out folks houses for furniture market . . . no. no, that won't work.

but right now, there are not teams so . . . they shouldn't have any trouble finding a place for them to stay.

I'll definitely be swinging by on Saturday to check out the "action" though. not that I expect to see a whole lot of ultimate being played.

Thefan, can you help out the college kids with getting the tournament organized. The tournament is a fundraiser for the High Point Ultimate teams. I think their biggest challenge may be getting the word out to club teams. If you were to captain a team, I'm sure that would help them out too. As you probably know, starting a tournament from scratch is hard to do, so any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks

I think a lot of people would take Trent just a bit more seriously if his claims were not so obviously impractical & unattainable. His web site states that his championships will have 100 teams & that they will have championship tournaments in all 50 states. All in the first year.

I think it's very unspirited to promise something & not even remotely deliver on it.

Knappy:

All 50 states was an attainable goal. Maybe not practical, but I felt it was worth the effort. And at one point or another, we have had people in 48 states tell us they loved the idea and wanted to run their state tournament. Unfortunately, quite a few of those people ended up not following through, so we have been busy trying to recruit replacements. And yeah, the website hasn't been kept up to date, each state page is supposed to be done by the state coordinators, but if somebody doesn't run the tournament, they probably aren't going maintain the website either. Sad
There is a very easy way to find out the status of a particular state tournament, just go to the page and email click the email coordinator link.
There will be a series of new topics later this week with a complete list of where we are at for each state, region by region. But here is something to whet your whistles
States that will have a state tournament this year:
HI, CA, OR, WA, UT, AZ, NM, CO, SD, NE, OK, NC, GA, PA, NJ, VT
States that won't: AK, NV, ID
The rest are still up in the air, but I'm guessing we will end up with around 30 this year. If all the rest of the states fall through, and 16 out of 50 means you don't take me seriously, so be it. This is the start of something new, and it may take a while to get there, but I'm going to keep marching on regardless of how many critics decide to follow me around. Smile
I would love to hear some feedback from somebody who has done more this year.

Spirit Championships,
I will attempt to answer your email in a way that will take most everyone by surprise in the spirit of helping out a local team. both I and another fellow here in town have offered to help out the HPU guys on multiple, multiple occasions. We have made it clear to them that there are 4 very experienced high level ultimate players in town who would be very interested in helping to develop a team there and who have a great deal of experience building a team, including how to recruit and set up drills and practices as well as hosting tournaments. we have never been contacted.

so, if your hosts wish for some help, they can contact me via email and I will be glad to provide them with guidance as well as contact information for the other 3 individuals in town who could also help with advice and donations of their time.

I will not captain a team as I have plans for the Sunday of that weekend and serious doubts about the venture getting off of the ground.

some may also question just exactly how the "freefallseries" would come to cost $300 a team, especially since the hosts have no experience running a tournament, and how something that is "free" is also designed as a fundraiser for the local team. a team, that is at a school in a blue collar town in the south that costs $40k or more per year to attend and whose students live on a campus that is designed to be all inclusive so as not to expose them to the world outside it's walls. a team that has never even attended sectionals and who as recently ast 3 years ago was having trouble getting the school to let them attend tournaments because the administration didn't understand why they needed to stay away overnight. but i'll leave that to them.

"Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless."

Trent, it's your execution, not your efforts or dreams, that I am critiquing. It's not fair to your participants to promise one thing & deliver another. You claim that 16 state tournaments will happen. That's impressive if you can pull it 16 quality events. But, it's not even close to the claims on your web site.

I think you'd find a lot more support from people if you under promised & over delivered. And, if your marketing (Freefallseries) actually matched your product (not a free fall series).

To me, what you're proposing is like an ultimate pyramid scheme. You recruit others to run the tournaments for you, not knowing exactly what each partner can or will deliver (your words: ("unfortunately, quite a few of those people ended up not following through"). Your timeline seems completely unrealistic, and even now you are claiming you may add up to 14 more events with only weeks to go.

The participants expect a real fall series, with professionally run events of comparable quality, culminating in a national championship worthy of a serious investment of time & money (airfare, hotels, etc). Are you confident that you can actually deliver on that expectation?

To thefan, if you could drop a quick email to spiritchampionships at gmail.com we will definitely encourage the HPU organizers to contact you for help with this tourney and for future guidance. You may have to deal with the women's team initially, as that is who we are dealing with. And if this tournament does nothing more than break down some barriers between the college teams and the club players in your area, that will be a start. Thank you.

man, Pete, i think it's sad that you think it's so funny. but it doesn't surprise me one bit.

start up team passes repeatedly on a chance to take advantage of the experience and knowledge that could help them get off the ground. hilarious

meanwhile, 9 years after first contact with this start up college team they have yet to attend their first sectionals. i on the other hand relish the memory of being part of a group of summer leaguers who got talked into continuing to show up after league was over to run drills and stuff. then one day our mentor said, "hey, i think it would be cool if we kept doing this as a team and went to tournaments and stuff." then one day, 4 years later, the same group of ruffians was in Sarasota, Florida.

that, more often than not, is what i think of when i look back at my time in this sport.
