The intro paragraph is pretty awkward, but this roster looks strong. Five returners, including the potential top three Callahan nominees (Thorne, Lance, EJ). Looking forward to watching Tommy Li play with the best of D-I.

Having played D-III last year and against Tommy Li its nice to see support for the smaller schools that don't have the depth to make D-I. How he interacts with some of the biggest names in the college game right now will be interesting. Will NexGen be bringing back the active travel call from last trip and if yes how will this effect Li's big hucks that are, as noting here on RSD numerous times, often travels? I wish him all the luck and to show what talent the D-III schools can offer.

Could Dayne Meyer fill that last spot? He very well could be the most polished player in the college scene this year.

Sounds awesome. Sign me up. Would be better if they played AUDL rules, but I'll take it.

Travels or no, Tommy Li will have top 3 assists on the team by the end of the season. Just wait.

Last year's team will probably be better, but this team has some studs too. A few of the choices, though, aren't really that good.

Yeah I'm a little surprised that I don't see Mischa Freystaetter. How could you turn down a big man like that?

Well, what's nice about the tour is it gives some of the players people have been arguing about a chance to give it their best in front of everyone and to shut naysayers up if they can.

Sometimes college students, despite training a dozen hours a week and traveling across the country every other weekend the entire school year for Ultimate, are still college students. In order to play NexGen, you've got to be financially and professionally capable of traveling around in a bus for a couple months. I have no way of knowing if Mischa is in this group, but internships and summer jobs can play a big role in availability.

West Coast tilt to the small-school pickups: La Verne (CA), Whitman (WA), and Claremont (CA).

Since NexGen is a west-coast company, I'd imagine they are more comfortable taking a risk on small-school talent they have scouted in person as opposed to reputation. They weren't at D-III Nationals, and had likely extended offers beforehand.

I'm impressed by the geographic diversity they've managed in back-to-back years. They even have a German player this season:

Tommy placed 7th for assists in D3 nationals. Pretty sure he wont be in the top three on the nex gen tour. Not to mention that he had 16 turnovers.

Looking at the players with more assists than Tommy, only 1 other player had more assists than turns. I wonder if this is a product of the best throwers on DIII teams having to take more risks because of the quality of their teams. Also, Tommy had the best +/- of the top 10 assist guys.

I'd say one tournament is a small sample size, and the style of play at the D-III college level is much different then club. Is there a way to project a player's performance at the club level based on how they play D-III college? What about D-I? I wouldn't guess Tommy will be top 3 in assists (I'd guess he'd play more D than O).

Gambling on small school talent?

Have you seen Janin or Rehder on the field? Monstrous. Both played elite open in HS...

Also agreed its awesome a true D-III player (Li) and an international stud are in the mix.

a big problem with assist stats: they require your team to score.

Claremont tied for last. With the tournament structure that means they only played 5 games and in those games they have a total of only 46 goals. Tommy threw 39% of their goals. Other teams had more games and a lot more success so comparing just straight stats is misleading. Still going by percentage of the teams totals in assists, Tommy was 4th:

Ben Lohre of Lewis and Clark (51%)
Tevon Edwards of Reed (48%)
Sean Murphy of Rice (43%)
Tommy Li of Claremont (39%)
Chris Hannah of Georgia College (38%)

As for the turnovers, with the wind at nationals, the throwers on teams really had to take chances. Other than GOP, there wasn't a team that I watched, that could work the disc up the field without taking lucky shots. Going downwind, you never wanted to risk giving up a short field when you didn't have to so many teams would basically play punt and d. Puget sound made the finals looking like a pickup game going downwind. They would send 5 guys into the endzone and just huck it down there. If they got lucky great, if they turned it, well now they could get a short field if GOP messed up. The point is that without a full team of great disc skills, the main throwers for many teams were taking shots that were very likely not to work. I'd imagine Tommy was taking these chances as well.

I have never seen Tommy play where he wasn't one of the best two or three guys on the field. With NexGen roster, he certainly won't be one of the best. It will be interesting if he can fill another role like a d-line handler who is just a possession type player on a turn.

I don't think he'll be top 3 in assists but it will be nice for the D-III players to see someone on the team that they can compare themselves too.

He means they played Elite Open Club WHILE in highschool. Rehder made sockeye and Janin played Rhino (i believe) while in Highschool. Both also were junior worlds players (along with Tommy Li).

WORD FUCKING UP. i think these nexgen guys would be complete idiots
if they didnt try and network with the audl and play at least one or
two audl teams. of which, i could see this nexgen thing becoming an
audl program in which the nexgen team became contractually obligated
to play against audl teams ONLY. think about it, the audl is
obviously gonna be MUCH BETTER at promoting and presenting such
showcased games that the idivisual/independant teams that they
currently play AND the audl is already set up to run single game
formats......aside from having built in fan bases.

Ok, perhaps a bit of a stretch to package the three in the same "small-school player not going to D-I nationals" category.

I was defended by Rehder for a few points his rookie season ('08) but have not seen much of him since (I hear he has gotten much better as an all-around player), and have not seen Janin or Tommy play (in person) because I am in the southeast.

I'm not questioning anyone's inclusion, just saying that when selecting a team, you are predisposed to go with what you know, and in general NexGen has done well to cast a wide net.

Matt Rehder was cut from jr worlds in '08, then made sockeye and
played at big boy worlds instead.

True. But Rehder eventually made 2010 junior worlds team as well.
In regards to Tommy Li, the teams were chosen before D3 nationals and he was the best player on the team to win it last year. Giving D3 exposure isn't a bad thing and from last years results he is the guy to go with, even if you think he doesn't match up to the other players. Rhys Lindmark would've been another option.

That would actually be an interesting thing to look at, does anyone know the statistics of AUDL attendance VS the number of people at NexGen games. They seem a similar marketing format (one game+pay to watch). Was attendance recorded at NexGen games/ is AUDL attendance still at the level it was opening weekend?

you say tommy li had 16 turnovers like thats bad for a top 10 assists player. the top ten assist throwers at DIII nats had (on average) 28.2 turnovers each. in fact, tommy li had the least turnovers out of any player in the top 10 in assists.

I think both the Nordens are playing with Canada's mixed nationals team at Worlds in Japan this summer, which is likely why you don't see either of them on the Nexgen roster.

That is correct, both Norden brothers are on the Canadian Mixed squad, which will be at Poultry Days, and should be the favourite for gold at WUGC.

Report from Colorado:

NexGen looked like... they hadn't played together yet. After going up 2-1, Bravo scores 7 in a row to take half. NexGen was able to slow down Bravo's team game but were unable to cover the quick handler movement. Josh Ackley in particular was very effective at shredding the young all stars with quick give and go's, fire cuts, etc. Hylke Sneider (sp?) was the primary downfield threat.

Nex Gen closed to within 4 before the home team pulled away again at the end. I expect the learning curve for NexGen 2012 will be steep.

Player notes:
-Nick Lance and Matt Rehder were not in attendance.
-Jimmy Mickle struggled against his club teammates, having trouble keeping up on D and throwing several turnovers.
-Tommy Li had a pair of sweet backhand hucks in the second half, first to Alex Thorne, and then to #1 (Jacob Janin?).
-Camden Allison-Hall had a pair of unfortunate drops, including a sweet 50 yd hammer from Thorne early in the first half.
