From the NFL website:
Sportsmanship
All of the player safety and on-field conduct rules that follow can be summarized in one word-"sportsmanship." Sportsmanship is a cornerstone of the game of football and of vital concern to everyone involved in the game, including players, coaches, officials, and League personnel. The term sportsmanship conveys respect for the game, respect for opponents, respect for the game officials, and respect for the fans.
The League will not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.

They should probably be more specific, e.g.:
grabbing/pinching the balls of an opponent underneath a pile is not considered good sportmanship
With all the cases of permament head damage surfacing and the related lawsuits, I'm sure it's a question of time before sports like american football, hockey and boxing are drastically changed/banned

which is why coach Gregg has spent several days this week in NYC visiting with representatives from the league. There will be fines, possibly suspensions.

keep on droppin the level, Euh. just when i think you've gone down and grabbed the lowest possible level of intelligence, you show off some more flexibility.
drastically change/ban the most lucrative sport in the country . . . yup, only a matter of time.
we can't even get people to agree to drastically change this sport and it ain't worth a dime.

It's not going to be as lucrative with more star players at the hospital than on the field. The NFL has already made changes in the past to protect the punt kickers and the quaterbacks.
The next financial incentive to change the rules will likely come from lawsuits brought to the court by former players:

no. thefan double mega supa dupa ten fold fucking miggedy miggedy mad dog hearts the NFL.
and misses the old Chris Berman segment on MNF, "Jacked Up" celebrating those big old hits. i wish somehow James Harrison could play in everygame.
i hope one day good ole american ingenuity will get us out of this mess we're in with our dependence on oil and coal, but that hope is second to the hope that the same ingenuity will give our NFL players lighter, stronger equipment allowing them to get back to crushing each other with reckless abandon.
